According to “Is your salad dressing hurting your healthy diet?” the standard serving size for salad dressing is 2 tablespoons. Many people do not realize that they are probably using more than the suggested serving size on their salad, and by doing so they are making their healthy salads “unhealthy”.
Store bought salad dressings can contain extra calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugar. Too much saturated fat and sodium may increase cholesterol and can lead to such problems as blocked arteries, and increased risk of a heart attack or stroke.
When purchasing store bought salad dressings, you should always read the label to see the nutritional value, and how much Saturated fat, Sodium and Sugar are listed.
According to KitchenTreaty –“Once you know the formula for homemade vinaigrette, you’re set!”
Here is their “Magical Vinaigrette Formula”
1 part vinegar to 3 parts oil, salt and pepper to taste
That’s it!!!
I have been using this formula for years, and my personal favorite is 1 part flavored vinegar with 3 parts grape seed oil.
Here are some other options to try:
OIL- choose from:
- extra virgin olive oil
- grapeseed oil
- canola oil, or
- vegetable oil.
VINEGAR- choose from
- Wine vinegar
- Rice vinegar
- Apple cider vinegar
- Balsamic vinegar
Note: Lemon juice can be substituted for vinegar if you wish. Or substitute 1/2 the vinegar with a citrus juice such as orange, lemon or lime)
SEASONINGS
The only other suggested ingredients are:
salt ( kosher salt or sea salt) and pepper (preferably freshly ground black pepper).
However, here are some ideas for extra flavour:
- Freshly chopped dill, basil, parsley, or cilantro, (dried herbs work, too)
- Finely minced garlic or fresh ginger
- Shallots, scallions, or onion
- Parmesan, Romano, or feta cheese
- Dijon mustard
- Sugar or honey
THEN JUST MIX
Mix either in a blender, whisk in a bowl, or shake in a jar with a lid, and then add to your salad.
